Colonial City of Santo Domingo celebrates 520th birthday

Declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1990, the Colonial City of Santo Domingo always impresses national and international visitors alike who walk through its 520-year-old streets.

The Colonial City is a constant reminder of the encounter that occurred five centuries ago between two worlds.

Today, many of the centuries-old colonial homes have become quaint shops, restaurants, bars, offices and, of course, various museums that explain the colonial history of the Dominican Republic.

The following sites are recommended to everyone visiting the Colonial City:

“Alcázar de Colón”: or Royal Palace of Diego Columbus, the brother of Christopher Columbus: Located in “Plaza de España.” (809) 682 4750. Open Tuesday-Saturday from 9am-5pm and Sunday from 9am-4pm. Admission Fee for Adults: RD$50.00.

“Museo de las Casas Reales”: “Las Damas” Street corner of  “Las Mercedes” Street. Tuesday-Sunday 9am-5pm. 809-682-4202. Admission Fee for Students: RD$20.00. Adults: RD$30.00.

Museum of the Dominican Resistance: “Arzobispo Nouel” Street #210. Tuesday-Sunday 9:30am-6pm. 809-688-4440. Admission Fee for Adults: RD$100.00. International visitors: RD$150.00. Children aged 4-12 years and seniors over 65: RD$50.00. Under 4, admission is free.

Amber Museum:  Arzobispo Meriño Street #452. Monday-Saturday 8:30am-6:30pm. Sundays from 9am-1pm. 809-686-5700. Admission Fee for Adults: RD$50.00, children under 12 free.

“Fortaleza Ozama” : “Las Damas” Street. Open daily from 9am-5pm. 809-686-0222. Adults: US$2.00

Museum of Rum and Sugar Cane: “Isabel La Católica” Street. Monday-Saturday 9:00am-5:00pm. 809-685-511. Free admission.

“Catedral Primada de América”:  “Arzobispo Meriñ” Street. Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm. 809 682-3848. Free admission.

“Museo de la Familia”: “Padre Billini” Street. Tuesday-Saturday 9am-4pm, Sunday 9am-4:45pm. 809 689-5000. Adults RD$100.00, students and children RD$40.00.
