The US Government yesterday denounced the situation in which they live Haitian immigrants and their descendants in Dominican Republic, considering that they are victims in many cases of "discrimination" which even manages to leave them in a State of "statelessness".

The annual report on human rights of the United States Department of State.UU., concerning 2012 and published yesterday, recalled in the Dominican Republic, with a population of 9.7 million, residing between 900,000 and 1.2 million undocumented immigrants, "most Haitians or their descendants".

"The application with retroactive character of migration policies results in statelessness of iure and de facto for people who have lived in the country for generations", said.

The report also reported that, "in some cases", agents of the security forces operating in the country "irrespective of the control Government'.

"Other human rights (in Dominican Republic) problems include arbitrary arrests and detentions, extrajudicial killings, a role weak justice, trafficking of people, overcrowding in prisons and discrimination based on sexual orientation," condemned the US Department of State.

With regard to Haiti, the report said as major threats to human rights "the weakness of democratic Government" in the country, as well as "practice absence" of the exercise of the law, a judicial system vulnerable to political influence and corruption, "chronic and severe".

"Problems that affect basic human rights include some arbitrary killings by government officials, excessive use of force against suspects or demonstrators, discrimination against women and trafficking in human beings," said the Department of State.

The report also said that the Haitian Government has made efforts to "pursue and punish officials who commit abuses", but lamented that "credible reports" are still pointing to the practice of corrupt activities "with impunity".
